Artist statement

My work revolves around topics related to women and those of the Latin/Hispanic culture. Being in the position that I am as a woman of color, I strive to create artwork that pulls from my personal experience and focuses on issues related to these minority groups. Within the art field there seemingly has only ever been the promotion of art created by and for a specific set of people.

In a world with such a diversity of culture and experiences living among another that we exist in today, there is a need for art more than ever that celebrates this array of individuals. I feel as though women, or more specifically the idea of women empowerment, as well as the Latin population have been villainized. Not only have our stories and struggles been downplayed and even shut out, but they have been turned into a way for others to look down upon us.

Through the medium of printmaking I strive to combat these views and allow for the truths to be seen and understood. It is important to me not only to promote these issues regarding women and the Latin community but for those outside of the upper classes to be able to view my artwork. Printmaking allows for me to create “high-end” contemporary work that has the ability to be seen by the general public at a large scale but still be held to a high quality.
